Anodising of 316L surgical steel involves the electrolytic formation of an oxide layer. This allows permanent, non-abrasive colour coatings to be obtained on its surface. Due to the low nickel content, titanium-anodised surgical steel products should not be used by people who are allergic to this metal. This material should also not be used for fresh piercing. It can be subjected to a sterilisation process.
